Adam's Rib

A genteel, battle-of-the-sexes type comedy with a high quip-per-minute ratio. Did not hold my attention. (I left the room to read about The Strange Career of Jim Crow instead.) Do any George Cukor films withstand the test of time?

  1. To answer your question, No. None of his movies that I have seen really stand the test of time. Some of them are interesting when compared with their remakes. "A Star is Born" is a fairly faithful remake of Cukor's film of the same title about Judy Garland. The remake (well, I'm not really sure if the remake was intended) of "It Should Happen to You", a cliche rags to riches story, has the most interesting remake, "It Could Happen to You". "It Should Happen to You" reduces women to a market in which physical beauty is the currency. The remake preserves the romance (in the classic '40s style as well) and substitutes physical beauty for actual cash. Women are either greedy or naive and all dependent on men. It is in poor taste to remake the film in such a fashion, trivializing concerns of the working class by reducing life to events that revolve around market exchange. Unlike the remake's salvation in a large bank account, the original at least had a sense of irony, intentional or not.
